Casebook Message Boards: General Discussion: General Topics: Tower of London

On Tuesday I (and four kids - HELL) went to the Tower and the following thoughts came into my head. a. A soldier from the Tower would be a 'usual' person to be seen on the streets of Whitechapel. b. Except for in the case of Long liz a horse could have been used for a quick get-away (If people didn't 'hear' a carriage (because it was a normal sound) they are hardly likely to 'hear' a horse!) c. They had money and were 'trustworthy' d. Soldiers usually carried weapons, so it wouldn't be suspicious to find them with daggers etc... e. martha obviously trusted a soldier f. They must have been a very frustrated bunch in the Tower, and a lot of them must have had homosexual tendances. g. There is a map in the White Tower which shows where the soldiers got their provisions from (IT IS A MAP OF THE MURDER SITES!!) h. Soldiers wore a cloak (a good way of covering bloody hands etc...) Has anyone gone down this avenue before?????? Let me know Liza P.S. Hope you all had a great Easter!

This is a good idea Liza , although a cloak wasn't part of dress uniform for the average Victorian soldier. I have been thinking about the idea that Jack was a soldier for a while , see my 11 Points about Polly Nichols board. If it is possible to note down the sites of the military provisioners from the map in the White Tower , please put them on this board. The Tower of London being right next to the East End and soldiers being what they are , I imagine the sight of soldiers ( or sailors ) in Whitechapel after the ladies wouldn't have been an uncommon one.

I'm not sure if movements were restricted, but the carrying of sidearms (i.e.bayonets) was. I think that O.R.'s based at the tower would have been subject to the same restrictions on their comings and goings that affect the Tower's inhabitant's today. Steve s.
