Jack the Ripper in the Provinces: The English Provincial Press Reporting of the Whitechapel Murders Stawell Heard Self published, 100 copies only. 2005. Booklet, illus. 37pp. Another examination of the press coverage surrounding the Ripper case, this time in the areas outside of London. Heard's careful study of the provincial press has uncovered a number of previously unknown reports, many of which are reprinted here in part or in full. Examination is also made of the press in general and Victorian crime reporting in particular. Well written and certainly worth a read. Recommended for the serious student of the case, and those particularly interested in the contemporary press coverage. Available for purchase through the author for £10UK. Stawell Heard is a longtime contributor to Ripperologist, and an essay he did some years ago on Druitt's school, Blackheath, is among the finest they've ever published. I intend on purchasing anything published by Stawell Heard. Yours truly, Tom Wescott |
