The Whitechapel Murders of 1888: A Subjective Look into the Mystery and Manipulation of a Victorian Tragedy John Malcolm Self published. Hardcover, illus. 105pp. Just received this in the mail today. Self-published yet handsomely produced in hardcover with color illustrations throughout. Apparently this edition only had a print run of 26 copies, but from a quick glance at the first few pages it appears the author intends to release another (updated/revised) edition sometime in the future. Will post a full review in the next day or so.

Hi Tom, Stephen has one of his articles up, Mary Kelly Is Dead. You probably read it when it came out (2002). Cheers, Dave |

Dan - I got #7 - do I win? Tom - John is a member of these boards and, as David pointed out, author of that article which originally appeared in Ripperologist. As a matter of fact John points out in the first few pages that this book is an extension of (or at least was inspired by) points and ideas raised in that article. I've read it over once and though I'm not quite ready to review it in full, I did enjoy it. Its very conversational in tone - sort of like reading a transcript of a conversation you'd have with a fellow Ripper bud over a few pints on a Friday night. John makes it clear that (1) the book is for specialists only and (2) he doesn't intend to present any new theories or revelations, but just a few interpretations he's made on various aspects of the case. He includes liberal quotations from various sources which he's found particularly illuminating, and even includes a "breakdown" of his own extensive Ripper library - broken down into 3 categories (best, not so bad and just plain horrible). I plan to give it another read-through before I write the full review. As for pricing/ordering information, I'm not entirely sure the book will actually be available to the public - at least in this iteration. But I've asked John for more info and will of course post his answers here (if he doesn't do so himself first).

Hi Stephen, If I believed in lucky numbers, #7 would probably be the luckiest one of the bunch. Unless we were playing blackjack, that is, in which case mine would be the one to have.

Just an update: John has told me that this edition of the book is not available for sale, though down the line he hopes to produce an affordable, publicly-available second edition. He has, however, generously offered to send one first edition copy to the Casebook to be auctioned off in order to raise funds for the web site. So, stay tuned for that, and thanks John for the contribution! Stephen P. Ryder, Exec. Editor Casebook: Jack the Ripper

And now the obvious question... Does Stewart Evans have a copy? PHILIP Tour guides do it loudly in front of a crowd!

Just wanted to let everyone know that a signed, first-edition of John Malcolm's new book is now up for auction on eBay at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4555550261 This is copy #15 of only 26 ever published, and quite possibly the only copy that will ever be made available for purchase. John has very graciously donated this copy to the Casebook to raise money for the web site. Auction ends in a week - good luck! And thanks to John for the donation!! Stephen P. Ryder, Exec.
