Chris Scott, I think it was a tiny part of your excellent work on Casebook, that - on the old Message Boards- you posted the guest list for the Canford Ball at Lord Wimborne's house, for Prince Albert Victor in mid- December, 1888, taken from the local paper. It was quite long I think. Not being technologically literate I tried to open the link which you posted showing the whole list on those Old Message Boards (on my CD ROM of Casebook ). Needless to say, it did not come up. Would Stephen P Ryder and other Casebook people be agreeable if I asked Chris to provide that link again on this current board? After all,I think it would be relevant to our present discussions. What do y'all think?

Good point John S - I used to live in Chiswick and there are definitely no mountains there!!! I am checking back through research notes (of which I have rather a lot!!!) to find out where I traced this from. As soon as I find out the source and can let you know any more I will post it. All the best |

John R I have looked back through my notes and cannot find any reference to posting anything about the Canford ball. Can you let me know when the post you are referring to was sent and what it said and I'll see what I can find All the best Chris |

Dear Assistant Commissioner Chris Scott, Sorry Chris, Yes, you are correct. It was not you who supplied a download of the SOUTHERN GUARDIAN newspaper article of Saturday 22 December, 1888, listing the entire company of guests at Lord Wimborne's Canford House Ball for Prince Eddy. It was Simon Owen. On 07 July 2000. On the Druitt Suspect thread on the Old Message Boards. You produce so much Chris. Sorry to Simon too. Stephen P Ryder, Would I be out of order if I asked for your OK for the above List of Guests to be re-posted on this thread? This of course, subject to your OK and subject also to Simon agreeing to do so. I would love to see that list and cannot access it on the Old Message Boards CD ROM.Thanks. If I am out of order I'll accept the judge's decision. |

On second thoughts, perhaps it would be more appropriately directed to the Press Reports section (Vale Viper). Now I know, as Neil Glass so sharply pointed out, the list of invitees to the Ball would only have been taken out of say, the Royal Blue Book by one of Lord Wimborne's secretaries. And publishing that list will not throw further light on Montague Druitt's suicide, but one never knows.. With this clever crowd of Ripperologists who knows what might come to light? For instance, I read somewhere (I think Georgina Battiscombe's biography of Queen Alexandria) that Prince Eddy's father held Lord Wimborne in low regard. If this is so, might the pointed breach of protocol by Prince Eddy in not observing the appropriate period of mourning for a recently deceased Royal cousin, indicate a clique of Prince Eddy supporters at a Shoot and Ball in Darkest Dorset??? |

Hi John, I have a copy of Battiscombe's biography of Alexandra. The index does not seem to list Lord Wimborne, but he may be mentioned in passing somewhere. Can you shed any light on this? Jeff |

Hello Jeffrey, Just had a quick look at Battiscombe, and you are correct, Lord Wimborne does not feature in the index. I shall have to wade through copious disorganised notes and discover where my butterfly mind dredged that memory from! In the meantime, does anyone have any view on my suggestion to resurrect the Wimborne Ball guest list for permanent placement somewhere on Casebook? And also, if desirable, where to place it? Stephen? |

Yes, please, let's have the list. For my money, Druitt is still a perfectly respectable suspect but also, as Jeff once said, his story is an interesting one in itself. As to where to put the info, I don't know, John. Just don't open a thread called Balls. Robert |
