I raised the subject as a new thread some time ago but it would appear that it has now become inactive. However I still feel that this particular subject is in need of further investigation. Joseph Barnett, Mary Kelly’s man-friend, had stated that the reason why he had ceased living at 13, Miller’s Court was because Kelly had brought a prostitute named ‘Julia’ to live with them. Some have suggested that this may have been Julia Van Turney but this suggestion is based solely upon the coincidence that she had the same first name and a newspaper report which suggested that ‘Julia’ had perhaps been German. However it is interesting that Julia Van Turney had been a resident of 1, Miller’s Court which is the address which actually appears on Mary Kelly’s death certificate. The arguments against ‘Julia’ having been Van Turney is that fact the latter had actually been a laundress and not a prostitute and at the time of Kelly’s death had been living with a man called Harry Owen. Further a resident of Dorset Street claimed to have seen Barnett and Kelly in the company of this mysterious ‘Julia’ in the Horn of Plenty on the night of her murder but failed to identify her as Van Turney. It would appear therefore that ‘Julia’ has become confused with Van Turney and I believe this is a mistake. Because Barnett had lost his job it would seem that he had fallen out of favour with Kelly who had then perhaps brought a fellow prostitute in to help pay the rent which was now in arrears. Also with the ensuing state of panic at that time in the East End and especially in Dorset Street itself with a murder already having taken place just across the road, working in pairs would have been a highly desirable option for women in such a profession. It is because of this that ‘Julia’ could have potentially represented a vital witness in the case as far as the police investigation was concerned and yet we hear nothing further of her.

The corruption of names between press reports and the police etc make this a minefield. I have an open mind on "Julia" but refuse to theorise about her or around her, as any hypothesis that might emerge would IMHO be too unsoundly based. Has any recent research been done on Julia? has any more information emerged? Do any other posters here have views? Phil |

I have stated before on these boards that Julia may be the explanation for Jack's suddenly attacking a much younger woman. If he had been stalking her and saw her going into that little room, and then he got in at night and the person on the bed was just a silhouette, he may have thought he was killing Julia who could have been older. Julia Van Turney was older. |

G'day, Julia VENTURNEY stayed with Kelly and Barnett for three nights from the 27th of October, until the 30th of October when she left because she had found another room in Millers Court on 30th October. Barnett walked out when Mary invited another prostitute Maria Harvey to stay. Julia Venturney testified at Mary Kelly's inquest, and attended her funeral. LEANNE |
