I am currently transcribing some Daily News articles and saw the paragraph below. This relates to the sighting by an unnamed informant of a bloodstained man hurrying through Mitre Square. The time is noteworthy. IF the Maxwell and Lewis reports are right then this would be intriguing. Anone know more of this report and who the witness was? Chris Daily News 12 November 1888

Interesting, Chris. One wonders why information like this -- true or dubious -- have remained unknown and been given such little attention in contemporary file material. Was this witness interviewed by the police or was it just another cooked up tabloid story? Inriguing indeed. All the best Glenn Gustaf Lauritz Andersson Crime historian, Sweden |

Hi Guys, You are so right i consider this a very intresting article, for as Chris points out it would go a long way in backing up Maxwells and Maurice Lewis accounts, as mentioned i noticed this some time back, and it is worthy of discussion, I find it so intresting as if this person was the killer of kelly, he is obviously hurrying back to his accomodation, which may account how he happened to come across Eddowes after despatching Stride. Remember the witness who mentioned this had not heard at 1010am of a murder, and it had been 38 days since the previous, so he was hardly expecting to bump into Jack at that hour. It certainly goes a long way in specualating that kelly was killed after Maxwells sighting. Regards Richard. |

Gentlemen, It is a long way -- literally and figuratively -- from Mitre Square to Miller's Court and it would be the wildest speculation to see any connection to the Kelly murder even if the reported incident happened. To begin with, there is no mention in what direction the "blood-spattered' man was headed. For all we know he might have been headed toward Miller's Court. Then there is the question of whether the man really was bloody. It could be that the informant had reason to be familiar with blood stains, but even fresh blood (and far less dried blood) is generally not the color people imagine. Still, it could be true that the fellow had blood on his face and shirt, but had suffered a bad nose bleed, was an inept shaver, had rendered aid to others suffering from the previously mentioned complaints . . . and on and on up to pondering how such a person could have made it from Miller's Court to Mitre Square without anyone else remarking upon or remembering his appearance. It would profit everyone who visits the boards to take a little time and read the press reports of some recent event about which all the facts are now known. Peruse the initial and follow-up reports in as many different papers as possible. It will certainly make you a little cynical about what you read in newspapers, but will also be time profitably spent. It has always been interesting how we all leap upon the errors in contemporary JtR newspaper articles (and they are rife)and yet we often get very excited about lone, unsubstantiated reports for which we have no evidence with which to assess them. Hi Chris, Don, et al. while doing some research to correlate witness/informant sightings this incident caught my interest as well. At least the "Daily News" was not the only newspaper which mentioned this incident. St. James Gazette 12.11.88 - however, nearly the same article and no new information Greetings from Germany eastsidemags
