When play in this match at Winchester ceased on Friday last, Eton had completed an innings for 240 runs, and seven wickets of the other side were down for 45. On Saturday, Messrs. Thornton and Bird, the not outs for 25 and four respectively, resumed batting at 10 minutes to 11. Even at this early hour for cricket there was a large company. Eleven runs were added to the overnight total when Mr. Bird was caught in the slip. Mr. Thornton carried his bat through the innings. His score included one four, three threes and four twos. Mr. Druitt's ten were very creditably got together. Mr. W. Forbes bowled 29 overs for 32 runs - one no ball; Mr. Smith 3o overs, 39 runs; and Mr. Portal seven balls. Winchester being in a minority of 166 runs had to follow on, according to Law 46. More weakness was displayed in the second venture than in the first. Mr. Thornton hit well and profitably. Mr. Eyre obtained his total from two fours off successive balls. Saving Mr. Sheldon no other batsman exhibited any defence worth mentioning. The eighth, ninth and tenth wickets fell for 68. Mr. Forbes bowled 19 overs and three balls for seven runs - two no balls. Mr. Smith 13 overs, 18 runs; Mr. Portal eight overs, 20 runs - one wide ball; Mr. Whitfield three overs, three runs; and Mr. Bury, 11 overs, 10 runs.
