A sensation was caused this morning by a report that a woman was stabbed and nearly killed in Picadilly last night. Enquiry, however, soon found out that the matter was nothing more serious than a violent assault. The woman, whose name is Adelade Rogers, quarrelled with a tall, well dressed man, who finally struck her on the head with a blunt knife or stick and ran away. He was pursued by an infuriated crowd, but escaped. The woman is in hospital, but the wound is not dangerous.
The London police have in custody a German wearing a tall silk hat to whom suspicion attaches, as he is stated to have drawn a formidable looking knife, and attempted to stab a German lad with whom he quarrelled at a coffee stand on Sunday night. It seems to be thought that the murderer must be a person who goes about with a long knife.
