Resumption of the Coroner's Inquest in the Case of Alice Mackenzie
London, Aug. 14.
The working lads institute in the Whitechapel road was crowded with an ill assorted collection of humanity this morning when Coroner Baxter of Middlesex resumed the inquest on the body of Alice Mackenzie who was murdered and mutilated by Jack the Ripper in Castle alley, Wentworth street, on July 14. The inquiry had been postponed until today in the hope that the efforts of the police to capture the murderer would prove successful. At this morning's session, however, Detective Inspector Reid and Officers Walter Reid and Jos. Allan, who have been specially detailed on the case, testified that not a clue had been secured which was calculated to lead to the detection of the criminal, and the jury thereupon returned a verdict of "Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown."
