Between 1975 and 1984 Sutcliffe was known as the "Yorkshire Ripper" as he terrorized prostitutes around Northern England with his hammer and other instruments of torture.

A former mortuary worker, Sutcliffe apparently spoke with God frequently. The good Lord ordered him to go out and hunt prostitutes and, as a true Christian, he did as he was told. Luckily, he also enjoyed the job and would cum in his pants as he hammered and stabbed his victims to death.

Police were frustrated with numerous false confessions they received during their search for him. On January 2, 1981, Sutcliffe was finally caught sitting in a car with a prostitute. While in custody he confessed everything. The ripper is also suspected of having killed and maimed several other women in France and Sweden during his travels abroad.

On March 10, 1997 Sutcliffe was stabbed in both eyes by a fellow inmate during a fight at the Broadmoor Hospital. It is believed that Sutcliffe was in his room in Henley Ward when he was attacked. The attacker, Ian Kay -- also known as the "Woolworths Killer" -- stabbed The Ripper with a fibre-tipped pen, the type used in drawing classes at the hospital. Not the nicest "chap in the block," Kay -- described as an "extremely dangerous man" -- was jailed for a minimum of 22 years in 1995 for the November, 1994, murder in southwest London of a Woolworths manager which he carried out while on leave from prison after serving less than three years of an eight-year term for nearly killing another shop worker in an almost identical attack.

On January 28, 1998, Kay admitted to stabbing Sutcliffe, adding attempted murder to his long list of convictions. In no uncertain terms, Kay told the court he had meant to attack The Yorkshire Ripper with a razor embedded in a toothbrush handle. "I was going to ... walk into the room and cut his jugular vein on both sides and wait there until he was dead. Killing has always been in my mind, ever since I've been here (at Broadmoor). In hindsight I should have straddled him and strangled him with my bare hands... He said God told him to kill 13 women, and I say the devil told me to kill him because of that."

In March, 1996, Sutcliffe was assaulted by a different patient. Then, a prisoner at the high-security hospital in Berkshire almost garroted Sutcliffe with the flex from a pair of stereo headphones because he "resented being locked up with sex offenders". The attacker was pulled off by two other murderers, Kenneth Erskine, the "Stockwell Strangler," and Jamie Devitt.

Under your list of Peter Sutcliffe's victims you say that he was known as the Yorkshire Ripper between "1975 and 1984". Yet his reign of terror actually ended in 1981 when,as you say,he was finally arrested.

There is a view which is to be quite honest hard to buy into that Sutcliffe was a copycat. The person who makes these claims (he calls his website the real yorkshire ripper)draws on among other things the claims of one Joe Sickert.

Excellent website on TYR, here (including an examination of the copycat theory and the O'Gara book which promoted it).

And, if anyone knows, how come the alleged accomplice is said to still be alive and yet is named all over the place ?

The BBC is reporting that a man has been arrested in connection with the notorious fake "Wearside Jack" tape which misled the police during their hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper.

Actually, this looks rather interesting in the light of earlier reports:

(1) In May, that "Police are to examine a claim that the prime suspect in the search for the Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer known as "Wearside Jack" was a police officer."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wear/4531143.stm

(2) [Posted earlier by Monty] In July, that "An audio tape and letters from a hoaxer who diverted attention away from the real Yorkshire Ripper have been misplaced, police have confirmed." (Said to have been discovered in an ongoing "audit", without any reference to the earlier news about the renewed investigation!)

G'day guys,

Just from this mornings paper 'Man Help Over Ripper Hoax' - a man is being held in connection with hoax letters and the 'Ripper Tape'.

He's a 49yr old bloke from Sunderland apparantly - and yeah, 'In July, West Yorkshire Police said the tape and letters had been misplaced.

It's on page 2 of the Daily Mail, but no doubt every paper over here will have a story about it. The Express will probably say the Liverpool Police have arrested a 90yr old granny with forging the letters and tape who had a sex change to disguise his voice.

I'm not even gunna mention the 'Diary'

The man held in connection with the 'Wearside Jack' tape (and corresponding letters) has been named as John Humble, a 49-yr old divorcee.

Although the search for Wearside Jack was officially closed two years ago, it is believed that yesterday's arrest came after police recovered the letters previously thought to have been lost. DNA techniques unavailable at the time of the original investigation may have been used to analyse spit from the envelope's seals.

Stephen,
That would be the murder of Joan Harrison who was murdered in 1975. The hoaxers exact words were 'Up to murder 8 now you say seven but remember Preston '75.' This was in the letter dated March 13th 1978.
