Hi all; I always wondered about Harry Harris. It seems that he was a bit behind the other two witnesses when leaving the club, as Levy took off due to the unsavoury characters about, and Lawende was a bit ahead of the others. If he even glanced toward the man and Catherine Eddowes, he would have seen a different view than those ahead of him, perhaps even the man turned around and looked toward him as they all passed by. Some of the Jack letters contained the phrase Ha Ha or Ha. Ha. almost like a signature. Maybe Harry Harris was the author of some of these letters, and then he knew about the double event first hand. He is possibly the recipient of the threatening letter that says " You think I didn't see you, and I see your little games" etc. Then we have the unidentified witness who was to identify the killer at the Seaside Home (I know that you know me).. and is reluctant to identify the person from fear for his family, and doesn't want to be the cause of him being hanged. Perhaps the killer knows Harry was writing these letters, and it is a mutual blackmail situation; (If you identify me I will tell them that it was you sending the letters). I wonder if the police gave Harry Harris a type of witness protection so that he did not have to appear at the inquest in return for the identification of the killer, but he backed out. Something is just not right with the whole double event night, from the attack on Liz and the pipe man, to the way that the full description was held back at the Eddowes inquest. What is really going on here?? Joan |

Harry Harris: On the night of the Eddowes murder, three men left the Imperial Club at just after half past one and saw a man and woman standing at the entrance to Church Passage. These three men were Joseph Lawende, Joseph Hyam Levy and Harry Harris. Much as been found about Lawende and Levy but I have not seen much information about Harris. The origin of Levy and Lawende as East European Jews suggests that the Imperial Club may well have been a club for persons of this background and implies that Harris himself may have been of European Jewish origin, presumably having anglicised his name. In the 1891 census there is only one Harry Harris from this geographic and ethnic background: 111 New Road, Whitechapel. Head: Harry Harris aged 29? born Russian Poland - Carpenter Wife: Dora Harris aged 22 born Russian Poland Visitor: Sarah Goldstein aged 21 born Russian Poland - Domestic Servant The searchable index gives his age as 21 but it could be read as 24 or 29. As it has been struck through by the enumerator, itmakes reaing this age difficult |
