Does anyone know about this woman? I'm not too sure about this witness but the morning after Mary Kelly was killed. But before they found her body, there was some lady selling I believe it was peanuts out in the street near by. (???) Anyway, her claim was that a man asked her if she heard of the street the last killing took place. (That would be Catharine Eddowes murder)The lady said she did and the man said he knew more about than she did before he marched off. Does anyone else know anything more about this? Please reply if you do.

Where did you get that information from? I've never heard of it myself. Sarah |

Hi M.Mc, Sarah It was Mrs Paumier, a Chestnut Vendor on the corner of Sandy Road and Widegate Street. About 12 o'clock on the 9th November, she was approached by a man 5ft 6ins, wearing a black coat, speckled trouser and black silk hat. He had a black moustache and shiny black bag. He said to Mrs Paumier "I suppose you have heard about the murder in Dorset Street?" She said she had. The man grinned, and said "I know more about it than you do". He then walked away down Sandy Road. Mrs Paumier thought it was the same person who accosted Sarah Roney. All the best Rob |

I have always found this little incident amusing. Who knows what was going on, but I really don't find this suspicious. I think it is a striking example of the almost giddy feeling that came upon the locals each time one of the murders took place. Remember the crowds that came to see the yard behind 29 Hanbury St. and even paid for a glimpse through an upper window! People revelled in the news -- probably because it provided an exciting break from their otherwise dull struggle for survival. Let's face it, we all love to be scared. That's why we watch horror films and ride roller coasters! I think this man who spoke to the chestnut vendor was merely revelling in the fact that he got to be "a part of the moment" by being in the crowd near Miller's Court after the murder was discovered. But, of course, I don't know for sure. Andy S. |

Everyone, thank you for your reply. I wanted to know more about this and really any other odd things that went on around the time Mary Kelly was killed. I'm wanting it for something I'm working on. I'm sure this lady was freaked out by whoever this guy was. I know I would be. Even if he was not JTR he was a little sick in the head for doing this to this poor woman. |
