I finally got hold of a tape of this 1988 television production, hosted by Peter Ustinov and Jan Leeming, and I must say it was a puzzling but rather entertaining experience to watch. From comments by Martin Fido et.al. on another thread, I knew quite well what to expect, but I couldn't help clinging to the fact, that at least three of the five suspects discussed in the programme (D'onston, Gull/Royal Conspiracy and Prince Eddy) today seem totally out of date (the fourth one, Druitt, seems unlikely but is still open for debate and Kosminsky should rather be called David Cohen/Kaminsky or the "Polish Jew Suspect"). The fact that these suspects then appeared to have been stated as the most interesting ones (like the notion that some details we today are discussing as doubtful then still were considering stated "facts"), just illustrates, I think, how the development of the case has progressed in an incredibly rapid speed during the last fifteen years -- which also the great number of books since then clearly shows (regardless of their degree of speculative theoretical bass). What also became evident was how old myths and generally accepted theories has an ability to stick like glue in the public mind; in the "viewer's poll", Gull and Prince Eddy were amongst those who got the highest scoring, in spite of the conclusions and arguments of the "expert panel/talking heads" in the studio. I was, additionally, pleased to see that some of the old buildings on the sites (like the Essex Wharf) still remained. Another thing notable: since the women/murder victims in nearly all documentaries and fictions movies about the Ripper are portrayed with a Hollywood flair and is played by women who look too "pretty", they here actually managed to find characters who looked even worse and more ravaged than some of the actual women...
