I was reading a suspect thread which sidetracked me to another website. I saw something I had not seen on this website. One Hour before Liz Stride was murdered, a man bought some grapes from a friutier named Mathew Packer. Packer then watched as he sat down in the rain with Stride, not far from him, and they both ate the grapes. Minutes later Stride was dead. Detectives found the grape stalk just near her body. Packer gave an exact description of the ripper to the police. Packer himself recieved a letter ( no mention in 'Ripper Letters') from the ripper. It warned him not to say anything about that night or he would be carved up by the ripper. I must assume the ripper followed this fruitier home to get his adress. I have not herd of any other instance of the ripper doing this. Thus the discription he gives must be the recognised description. It would certainly rule out some suspects anyway. Anyone else know about this Mathew Packer letter, I would be glad to hear. |

Yes I too have heard this story somewhere before. Anyone have the actual reference? I wouldn't take it too seriously though. Packer was notorious for his lies. Martin Anderson Analyst

Hi Martin & Jason, Like I wrote on another thread, this was probably the threatening letter of 6 October, written in a very similar hand to the 'Dear Boss' and 'Saucy Jack' postcard. It was apparently intended for one of the witnesses in either Stride's or Eddowes' case. If made public, it would add veracity to Packer's statements. However, according to the file held at the Public Record Office this letter was found in the street between Princess Road and Selhurst Railway Station, so it was never actually posted at all. All the best, Frank "There's gotta be a lot of reasons why I shouldn't shoot you, but right now I can't think of one." - Clint Eastwood, in 'The Rookie' (1990)
