I don't know if this man was any relation to Joe, possibly not, in which case I don't really know why I'm writing this new thread here but I found the following on a web site entitled "1881 Census: Residents of Poplar & Stepney Sick Asylum, Devons Road, Bromley, London, Middlesex". I found (listed as an inmate of the asylum) a Michael Barnett aged 56 who was a dock labourer, born in Ireland. Who knows, maybe Joe's father didn't die, maybe he ended up in this asylum, or maybe he was some relative of any kind. Of course he probably wasn't but I wonder if there was any history of insanity in Joe's family. |

G'day Sarah, Joes parents, Catherine and John Barnett, were Irish immigrants. Thousands of Irish fled the poverty of of Ireland to seek a better life in London. The 'Michael Barnett' you found may have been a close relative of John's, but it would be too difficult to trace his family tree in Ireland. LEANNE |
