I had previously found the whereabouts of William Harvey Druitt in the 1881 census which I have posted elsewhere - he was a boarder at 59 Palace Garden Terrace London and in the census return his name was spelt Drewitt. I have been looking for some time for him in 1891 census knowing that by that time he would be living in Bournemouth. Finally tracked him down - the problem was that in the census index, his name was transcribed as DUEITT! His address in 1891 is given as Montgomery, Kerley Road, Holdenhurst, Bournemouth. His details are given as: WILLIAM H. DRUITT Age 34 Single Solicitor Born in Wimborne, Dorset No surprises there, but this is where it gets interesting! His household is just William, an unmarried man, and two domestic staff. It is the second one of these that caught my eye. 1) Jane Peckham aged 30 Servant/ Cook Domestic Born in Ringwood, Hampshire 2) Eliza J. Whiteman aged 15 Parlour Maid Born in Whitechapel, London I'd be very interested to know how William in Bournemouth came to employ a young woman from Whitechapel! The 1891 entry is below. Hope it's of interest. Chris

Re the above post- this gets even more complicated. There is almost certainly a family relationship between Jane Peckham (born Ringwood) and Eliza Whiteman (born Whitechapel). I have found Eliza Whiteman in 1881 census, living in Ringwood, Hampshir with her grandmother, named Eliza Peckham. Address: Kings Arms Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire Head: Eliza Peckham aged 56 born Southampton Widow Children: Walter aged 23 Bricklayer Edward aged 26 Dealer in Vegetables George aged 18 Dealer in Vegetables Henry aged 15 Errand Boy All children born in Ringwood Other: Eliza Whiteman aged 5, born London Granddaughter Jane Peckham, William Druitt's other domestic in 1891 is listed in 1881 as a 20 year old general servant to Frank Wareham, a butcher, of 106 Commercial Road, Holdenhurst, Bournemouth. But Wareham is listed as born in Wimborne. The Whitechapel connection must be through Eliza Whiteman's parents - presumambly there must be another Peckham daughter who married a man named Whiteman who had a Whitechapel connection. I will be pursuing this vigorously! Chris

Eliza's parents were named Charles and Sarah Whiteman. 1891: Address: 23 Lucas Street, St George in the East, London Head: Charles Whiteman aged 48 born Keymer (?), Sussex General labourer Wife: Sarah aged 35 born Southampton Children: Harriet aged 13 Charles aged 11 illegible (male) aged 8 Mabel aged 4 Arthur aged 2 Sydney aged 1 All children born in London The family are at 39 Lucas Street in 1881 but the family name is spelt Wightman. They shared the house with a family named McNamara, whose head, Michael, was from Limerick in Ireland. Small world! Lucas Street no longer exists, but from the district enumeration sheet (St George in the East, St George North, District 25) I was able to see what sort of area it was in. The district which included the Whitemans covered Lucas Street, Cable Street,Poonah Street, Hardings Street and Johnson Street. From the area description, it is clear that Lucas Street ran off Cable Street. It would have run between Commercial Road and Cable Street just north of the west end of the Ratcliffe Highway. Chris

the last link in the chain to verify Eliza's parents was to show that Charles Whiteman's wife, Sarah, was a member of the Peckham family. In September 1875, the marriage took place of Charles Whiteman and Sarah Peckham. The marriage was registered in Betnal Green. So nice when all the pieces fit!! Chris |
