the account below (Manitoba Daily Free Press 9 April 1892) caught my interest. It was at the stage where the defence were trying to imply that Deeming was the Ripper so that he would be brought back to England for trial. The passage that caught my eye is "The Government will be asked to pay the expenses of Deeming's witness from England as his relations are very poor." The only witness mentioned in the second half of the article obviously refers to Lawende's sightin near Mitre Square. At face value this article seems to suggest that Deeming's defence team were suggesting that Lawende be taken to Australia to testify. Comments welcome.
