I have finally tracked down a hard copy of Stephenson's whereabouts in 1891. In the 1891 census he is listed as a boarder at the following address: The Triangle Hotel Charterhouse Street St Sepulchre's London I have looked up the location of Charterhouse Street - it is immediately adjaccent to St. Bartholomew's Hospital In the census return his details are given as follows: Name: Roslyn D'Ouston Boarder: Marital Status: Single Age: 50 Profession: Journalist ("author" added) Where born: Elsham (Elsham is in North Lincolnshire, east of Scunthorpe) Cope of census entry below:

Found this map that shows Charterhouse Street clearly, next to Smithfield Market and Barts Hospital Ignore the "We are here" as I found this from an unrelated source

I think it highly likely (am still researching this) that the building that was the Triangle Hotel where Donston stayed still exists and is now known as the Charterhouse Bar. This is how the bar publicity describes the building: "Situated on the north side of Smithfield Market, London's famous meat-packing district, the Charterhouse building has an unusual triangular shape, making it potentially one of the most distinctive bar / restaurants in London." The "unusual triangular shape" strongly suggests this could be the origin of the odd name of the Triangle Hotel This is the main entrance: I have contacted the Charterhouse Bar to see if anyone there can confirm this identification and is any documentation survives Chris |

Nice looking old building. The clientele for 1891 seemed working class/lower middle class (the commercial travellers). D'Onston certainly towered above them in his class and profession. Jeff |

Jeff.... Yeah, but those people worked for a living. Stephenson couldn't have lived very well off of being a journalist as it is his "profession" in the 1891 census. This guy is what we call a luftmensch... He looks like he is living off the air around him. Could he have had a "side job" that will never be known? This is baffling, unless,of course,he was a recipient of money from the Stephenson clan... (Message edited by howard on May 29, 2005) HowBrown

Hi Howard, A luftmensch, huh? Do you think (vis-a-vis the Stephenson clan) he could have been a schnorrer? Best wishes, Jeff |
