Tumblety was into self-promotion in a major way. I've compiled all the Tumblety advertisements I could find from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle - 90 in total, split between two periods: 1863/64 and 1870/71. A few examples follow, and all 90 can be downloaded in the ZIP attachment at the bottom of this post.

My purpose in collecting these ads is not so much for their content, but for the dates and places in which they were published. It might be interesting to nail down Tumblety's movements as precisely as possible in the years previous to 1888 - if one assumes that he advertised only in newspapers close to where he practised, then this should be a fairly accurate means of detailing his history between 1850s and 1880s.

Precise dates are given in the ZIP file for each advertisement.

Hi, Stephen:

I think that's a good strategy to make a catalogue of the advertisements that Tumblety placed to promote his practice so thanks for making this file available to us.

All the best

Chris

Hi Stephen,
Good job on the advertisements. I will look into this with more detail. Will help me with my investigation.

Karen
