I came across this article today. It is from a US paper, the Oakland Tribune, and is dated 24 December 1910. It claims that "unwritten police annals" showed the Ripper to be a physician who had treated King Edward (i.e. Edward VII)
It is not clear whether the writer meant a physician who treated Edward when he was King or earlier as Prince of Wales. If the latter meaning is intended, then this could conceivably refer to Gull.

Hi Chris,

A very interesting find, many thanks for posting.

It certainly looks as though it could refer to Sir William Gull, and I think this might be the earliest reference we have to this story.

I wonder were the reporter at the Oakland Tribune found his information?

Rgds
John

This article seems to refer, or owe its origin, to the Dr. Howard story in The Sunday Times-Herald, Chicago, of 1895.
