And so to Camberwell Green and Kate Cutbush's china shop where she worked and lived in 1910. The newspaper article(s) supplied here by the redoubtable Robert describe the shop as being on the corner of Daneville Road and Denmark Hill. This is that junction.

This is St. Mary, Newington church on Kennimgton Park Road near Albert Street. It would have been , almost certainly, the church used by Kate, Clara and Thomas. Kate and TTC were married in a church with the same name but at that time it was located near the Elephant and Castle where there is now one of those gloomy parks on the old church grounds. Note the Dracula's castle type arches which may have been part of the original church.

I would like to think that this was Kate's shop at the corner of Daneville Road and Denmark Hill. It sort of looks like it might have been a china shop in a previous life

How about this for a most unusual and most welcome sight. Two nice pubs NEXT DOOR TO EACH OTHER! They are directly opposite the church and no doubt would have been known and used by young Thomas. Maybe South London isn't too bad after all.

Great guns, Stephen. I believe your efforts and work here to be absolutely elemental to our understanding of then and now. My hat is off to you, sir. |

Thanks Debra, Natalie and AP, This is a photo of No.12 Durand Gardens in Stockwell which may be of slight interest. Durand Gardens is a very pleasant road with the houses snaking around a central oval shaped 'garden'. Kate Cutbush and Clara lived at No.16 in 1901 and their house which is no longer there would have been to the left of the house on the photo. The strange thing here is that the next house along is No.20 and there doesn't seem room between the two houses to fit in numbers 14, 16 and 18. Maybe No.12 was built after those houses were demolished and was larger than the original No.12. A bit of mystery.

Hi Stephen, Thanks for these lovely photos. One thing though-those houses are very old-something like 1850 or so,which would mean they were probably built before Thomas Cutbush was even born.I know the style well as they resemble cottages we lived in in West london. They were surrounded with houses looking very like these so other houses would not have been squeezed in like you say.Rather, the numbering will have changed most probably and the only way to find out what they were then is through taking a name through the 1841,1851,1861,1871 etc etc censuses.I have done it before myself via the local history library. They all keep census records.Or via the net as you do from time to time. Fascinating to see these lovely old houses from the Victorian period. Natalie |

Hi Natalie, I think I've solved the mystery of Kate's missing house. On the MOTCO.UK site the 1862 London map shows the road very nicely depicted, houses and all, but at that time it was called 'The Grove'. Select Dorset Street(22,12) for the right map section then scroll around a bit to find The Grove. Kate's house, maybe in a mini-terrace of three houses, can be seen at the bottom left where the road curves. By the way, 'our' Dorset Street with Miller's Court is on map section (13,16) Now if you look at the 1898 Booth's Poverty Map Online you will see it is now called Durand Gardens and find the whole street rebuilt except for Kate's old house standing forlornly in the corner. |
