An article in the Ireland On Sunday a while back stated that Tumblety was born in Limerick any idea what this is based on? |

The article was in the Ireland On Sunday May 18 2003, and states that Dr T was born in Limerick 1833 and left in post famine Ireland. The writer was Siobhan Mulcahy. |

Francis Tumblety's brother, Lawrence Tumblety was listed in the Rochester City Directory as early as 1844 and living on Sophia Street. That street would have its name changed to Plymouth, and the Tumblety family lived on that street for decades. The 1844 date is before the Irish famine hit.
By typing in "Tumblety's Grave" on this Casebook's 'search' area, we can read how the 1850 Federal Census confirmed that the Tumblety clan had originated from Ireland, not Canada. If anybody declares Tumblety to have been born in the year 1830 between the dates of Jan 1 - May 28, that person would have Tumblety's own family supporting this observation.
Twice the Tumblety family was asked about Francis' birthdate and they answered consistently both times. When he died on May 28, 1903 his family listed him as being 73 years old. A birthdate in early 1830 would make an accurate fit. When the census takers knocked the Tumblety family's door in 1850, the family said Tumblety was 19 years old. A person born between Jan 1 - May 28, 1830 could still have been 19 years old for many days during the year 1850.
The reports which list him being born in 1833 seem to have originated from Capt. Streeter and Edward Haywood. Neither of them were kins to the Tumblety family, and they both just guessed at his age. I wouldn't label anything coming out of Tumblety's mouth to be legitimate, including the announcement of his own age. Tumblety told Martin McGarry he had been born in 1835. Tumblety claimed to be 28 years old when he registered at New Brunswick in July 1860, meaning he could have been born in 1831 or 1832. I'd rather stick to what his family consistently said about this.
