It is believed that it was Cezanne widely considered to be the greatest painter of the twentieth century[giving way later to Picasso and Matisse] whose gruesome portrayals of sex-murders,probably inspired by Emile Zola, who influenced Sickert the most.[from "Movements in Modern Art" by James Malpas ISBN 1-85437-186-X obtainable from Tate Modern or Tate Britain. This book which is reasonably priced traces the Realist Movement from its beginnings in Courbet toAmerican and British Realism Post Pop includes the current realist painters Frank Auerbach,Leon kossof, Lucian Freud [and recent past Andy Warhol etc].Its a good source book for situating Sickert and his influence.
