Dan,

All, seem to have been housewives before turning to prostitution, though Stride had been a registered prostitute in Sweden before coming to England and marrying. And in Kelly's case there is only Joe Barnett's story that she told him she had married young in Wales and had then been widowed.

Even after ending up in Whitechapel all but Kelly sought to earn money in ways other than prostitution. This included selling crochet goods, domestic service, hawking other items and hop-picking in season. Kelly, however, seemed only to live off men in one way or another.

Don.

dont think the police knew Catharine Eddowes as a prostitute.Myself while I think she may have done this when completely destitute as she was that night she of all the victims seems to have tried to live differently. Her biggest problem was drink which was why she was out at 1 o clock in the morning having just been let out of a spell in the nick! What an hour for the police to have let her out-alone,still a bit worse for wear having been in for D&D when there had been these dreadful murders in Whitechapel!
As for Mary Jane Kelly despite kindly neighbours sayingthey didnt often see her the worse for drink
the Jekyl and Hyde personality we learn about from various people suggest that she was addicted to drink/alcohol dependent more than anything else
and again to pay for her addiction she went on the game. Not much else seems to have moved poor Mary.
Natalie
