Nina, Cool, I've never seen some of those Illustrated Police News issues before. There seems to be standard ones you see in Ripper books (sometimes whole, sometimes in pieces), but there were a few Ripper ones in this set that I don't recall seeing any part of before. I have so much collecting to do... heh, if only I had the money to get everything.

A link to a fictional work about Jack which I could not find listed on Casebook. It is called In the Dark of Night and the "blurb" is as follows: A historical thriller about the 19th century serial killer, Jack the Ripper. In 1888 in New York City, the search for a serial killer of prostitutes comes to an end with the capture of Doctor Jack Lewiston, a respected surgeon and madman. But before he can go to trial, Jack escapes from custody and flees the country to London, England. Brought out of retirement to track him down is ex-NYC homicide detective-criminologist, Henry Marboro. In charge of the original investigation in the "Ripper Murders," Henry lost his objectivity when his younger sister was one of Jack’s victims. Now on a renewed mission, Henry must find Jack Lewiston and bring him back to America—dead or alive—hopefully before more prostitutes become the victims of the multiple sexual killer. In the process, Henry develops an attraction for a mysterious and beautiful American nurse, Loraine Broderick, who lives in London. Unfortunately, Jack also has his sights set on her as a target of his madness—in addition to ladies of the night streetwalking in Whitechapel in London’s East End The link is: http://www.sinc-ic.org/flowers.shtml |

http://antiqueguns.biz/guns/ripper.htm The gun belonging to Donald Swanson is for sale at $12,500. It is described as follows: This very rare brass frame Tranter pistol was made in England in the 1880's in caliber .22 short (marked .230 cal). This 7 shot revolver has a removable ejection rod stored in the grip. Top of the barrel is inscribed by the Merchant "H. Holland" "New Bond St. London". It is accompanied with original leather pocket protector holster with loops for wearing on belt. The Silver oval escutcheon inserted into the back of the grip is a very finely made and bears the inscription "to: Donald Swanson 1882" - with the family motto: "Per Deum Et Rege" ( Latin: "By God and My King") and the "Ducal (or Baronial) Coronet" over the monogram "AB" (or "BA")

Hi all, I was really impressed by the "Bert the muppet" theory. Odd though - I could have sworn that the giggling Ernie was a better suspect - he has a weird sense of humor. Maybe they worked in tandem, using Kermit as a lookout. Jeff |

Haven't seen this listed elsewhere on Casebook The Ghost of Oscar Wilde by Ed Sams DID OSCAR KNOW JACK THE RIPPER? Was this the secret that caused his downfall? From the grave, Oscar Wilde shed light on the hypocritical homosexuals of Queen Victoria’s court--and on the motive and identity of Jack the Ripper. Read an excerpt of this fascinating true story by Ed Sams. $6.95. http://www.curiouschapbooks.com/Catalog_of_Curious_Chapbooks/The_Ghost_of_Oscar_Wilde/body_the_ghost_of_oscar_wilde.html |

Hi All, Nothing at all to do with old Jackie Boy, I'm ashamed to say, but I just had to post (boast) about the following, since Alfred Henry Bool was my great grandfather (my dad's mum's dad) and John was Alfred's brother. I knew Alfred was a portrait photographer, with his own little studio in Pimlico. But I only discovered fairly recently what else the brothers got up to. Two of the three photographs attributed to them, that hubby found by chance while searching for Victorian photos, were on display in The Museum of London when we went there earlier this year. There they were, right by the actual Lord Mayor's coach that was used for the parade on 9th November 1888. http://www.photolondon.org.uk/gpr/gpr_Oxfordarms.htm http://www.photolondon.org.uk/whole_gallery/gmol_bool.htm For the final one, click on: 'Old houses in Drury Lane' http://www.eva-eu.org/en/naam/advancedsearch?query=bool&language=english Love, Caz X

Lyrics to an American comic song of the Victorian era that mentions Tumblety. I particularly appreciate his juxtaposition with Mme. Restell.http://www.mikedust.com/fascinatum/2002/fascinatum-052002-2.html -K "The past isn't over. It isn't even past." William Faulkner

Hi Kelly This song was mentioned some time ago on these boards. I stated at the time that, intriguingly, the song could indicate the existence of a photograph of Dr. Tumblety, of which there were probably a number taken, but which we today do not have. Sorry I missed that, Chris. I was curious also if it meant Tumblety had a carte de visite himself, but it's just as likely that the song is just making use of notable people. Someday I'll read through all the old threads! -K "The past isn't over. It isn't even past." William Faulkner

For anyone who is interested in doing research into the jewish community of the east end at the time of the murders, London Metropolitan Archives have digitised and put on line various immigrant records on this website:- http://www.movinghere.org.uk/ Among the records are the original registers of The Jews Free School admission and discharge registers, boys 1869-1893 and girls 1868-1900. The registers were beautifully kept and are easy to read ( in PDF format ) and give the dates the child attended the school and the name of a parent or guardian. On doing a quick scan I found many familiar names and addresses associated with the JTR case. Debra |

Also in digitised image form on site mentioned above:- (LMA) H12/CH/A/01/033 Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum Committee of Visiting Justices Minutes: documents relating to the transferral of Jewish patients to the asylum and the religious instruction of Catholic patients July 1872 to June 1873 format: Text I am not sure if any other years have been digitised, I came across this one by accident as there is no way to do a blanket search of what records are available, it seems to be just pot luck, but well worth a visit!

More Victorian clothing -- http://www.blockaderunner.com/nlc/nlc.html I found out reading about this that the rich got new clothes and the poor got used. Clothes were made to last longer and usually went through several owners. Today we have upscale clothing and moderately priced clothing, but it was different then. Note that Kate's clothes are not described as "cheap" but rather "old". They may well have started their existence in the posession of a person of class. |
