Hi, I have just come back from The Ripper Conference 2003. It was my first conference but I definitely will return and I have to say it was amazing. The highlight had to be 'Jean Overton Fuller' and her absolutely mesmerising tale of W.Sickert and co. I had to simply buy the book because of the overwhelming nature of her tale. I can also the Maybrick Diary was the hot potato of the conference as expected and I found the differing opinions fascinating. I came home and felt compelled to read the diary again. After this review of its contents I am still not convince and find it very suspect. I will be posting an update to this message tomorrow explaining why I find it suspect. I believe I have some fresh ideas so I hope people read my message and post their feedback. I am relatively new to the Ripper scene but I feel I have fresh view on some of the subjects so I will try to post some of my thoughts in the future. Best regards Tom |

Sue, You left a wish list me for some books and magazines you wanted. I thought I had one of them at home and I said I would get in touch and let you know. I tried your mobile when I got back but it was switched off so I left a message. If you ring me tonight after 9.45pm I'll give you the details. You'll have to phone me on my office number (its on my card I gave you) my mobile doesn't work at home. Now has anybody got any suggestions as to where we can hold the next one? Bob |

Yes Bob, IN EAST LONDON!!! There must be somewhere in the area that would be able to accomodate a JTR conference. Andy. |

Hello All Well, those of us who couldn't attend are waiting to hear of any breakthroughs brought forward at the convention. Are we any closer to naming JTR? Were Stride and Tabram victims of JTR? Who wrote the Diary? Was AP Wolfe named? Do we die only to be reborn to advance as eternal souls? Why do good things happen to bad people? And what of the gossip? Did anyone make a spectacle of themselves? We are waiting. While all this was going on I was stuck at a small law conference. Let me know if you can imagine anything more boring. A chance to catch up with old friends to be certain. But all of the stuffed shirts pretending to be more affluent than they were. Enduring stories from ambulance chasers. The phonies glad handing and back slapping people they couldn't stand. Oh the agony. All The Best Gary |

Dear Gary, I'm sorry didn't I mention that. Yes the identity oif JTR was definitely established, Stride was not but Tabram was ( and a delegate actually produced a photo of Martha Tabram at age 18)the diary was in the fact the first draft of an unpublished potboiler by Miss Millicent Meltravers, AP Wolfs identity will be revealed to anyone wishing to email me, when we die I'm afraid that's it, unless you are really evil in which case you come back as Tony Blair As for making a spectacle of themselves well my Saturday evening ended with the complete works of Gilbert and Sullivan, a partial rendition of Albert and the Lion, a medley of songs from the original Cockney Sparrers finished of by a recital of Gunga Din and If by Kipling and the calling of hotel security. An escape rope was fashioned by tieing all the napkins together which stretched completely round the dining room and came back to my table, and my brother and I received personal commendations for NOT putting a bloke through a wall. All in all nothing out of the ordinairy really. Oh and Andy Alliffe rather courageously faced up to a loud mouth drunk (not one of ours I hasten to add) and stopped him right in his tracks. I would like to say it was so very very nice to be with a really, interesting and extremely decent bunch of people who made it, certainly for me and brother Andrew an exceptionally pleasant weekend. Bob PS I also discovered humans can consume the best part of three bottles of wine and a bottle of vodka and still walk upright! |

Hi Gary I think that lawyers should become judges before taking leave of this world. Then they can die peacefully in their sleep. Of course, it isn't until the end of the trial that anyone notices anything..... Robert |

Thomas, like you it was my first time at a JTR conference. It was very interesting and Jean Overton Fuller's performance was mesmerizing. In my opinion the idea of a centralised gathering of information is excellent. The collation of notes, ideas etc will then be available to future ripperologists. I would like to thank Claudia and the other organisers for a wonderful experince. I would also like to thank Bob Hinton for the reminder email |

Hello Suzi, Yes the Frying Pan is a good idea. But nowadays it is a Indian resturant called the Shiraz!! As a matter of interest my Great grandfather William Henry Weston (the one in our book) lived at No 11 Brick Lane when he married in 1891 (in Christchurch Spitalfields) No 11, was right next door to the Frying Pan. Hi All, The delegate who produced a photo of Martha Tabram at 18 (a very beautiful girl was young Martha) was none other than my great mate Liza Hopkinson, whose daughter's friend has turned out to be a descendant of Tabram's brother! Great weekend - although it went by as quick as a flash, and in a blur of wine, tequila and Bailey's! It's not big or clever to drink until 4am, but in my defence I was in very good company. Hi to all the people I met for the first time (Sue, Carol and Toni among others) - please do join us for the Cloak & Dagger Club meetings at the City Darts if you get the chance. First Saturday in October is the next one, then the Xmas bash is in December. Lots of love, Caz

Hi Robert There was some videotaping going on, I noticed, during the last session with Jean Overton Fuller, which I unfortunately had to miss since I had arranged to meet a fellow Liverpool F.C. supporter from Denmark. So it occurs to me there may have been filming at other sessions. The whole weekend was a resounding success and it was phenomenal to be in the presence of Colin Wilson and Robin Odell. The weekend was one of many highlights, one after the other. Many thanks to Paul, Claudia, Andy, Adam, Coral, and Jeremy for all their hard work. As for the site of the next UK conference. . . Perhaps I dreamt it but I thought Brighton was mentioned? All the best Chris |

The conference weekend was great. One of the highlights was the unexpected appearance of Oliver Hardy on the Saturday night!!! The Bob Hinton inspired 'jape' with napkins....? Still don't know what that was all about!!!?? The best talk was George Skelly's. Keith Skinner's coolness to questions a let-down. ADRIAN. |

Yup it was a GREAT conference. Thanks to Claudia, Andy, Adam et al for all their hard work. The highlights of the weekend for me were: David Cantor for his inspiring talk (not to mention he's rather a dishy person!) Colin Wilson, who I've always wanted to meet, for bringing to our attention the writing on the 'Ripper letter', that should have lots of people investigating it. Also his wife was a joy! Anne Graham was the most natural and honest person, she was great company during the banquet, her daughter Caroline was a real stunner (why can't I look like that?) The 'Quote of the Conference' has to go to Mick Warboys, who, as I was gyrating with Albert Johnson, shouted out 'CAREFUL HE'S GOT A DICKY TICKER!' (think about it!!!!!)}} My thanks also go to Caz (careful with that shower) Morris for getting me to the talks/meals on time, and to Steve Ratty who took me on a 'Magical Mystery Tour' of Liverpool on Monday. As to where the next conference should be held, I vote Dieppe or if not then the East End (the City Hotel in Brick Lane may be worth investigating as a venue) After all the yummy food we ate I'm now going on a diet! Hope to see you all and some more at the next meeting and conference Liza P.S. Does anyone have a contact for Neal Sheldon? |

How about the next one being in Cardiff? You have the Mary Kelly connection with Cardiff to add the connections angle. It is also very well placed. You have the M5 bringing down people from the North, the M4 runs straight from London to Cardiff, excellent train services to and from the rest of the country and you have an airport next door. Bob

Hello Caz Are you serious about the photo of Tabram and if so I have to see it, I have to know how to find it. I've worked myself up into a state of bother over this. All The Best Gary |
