One abiding problem of using census data is that normally it is only possible to search by name - on occasion it may be desirable to search by address. Each enumerator was given a covering sheet showing in great detail the area he was to cover and I am currently transcribing these which should help with locating specific addresses. Initially I will transcribe these sheets for the following Parishes: Bethnal Green: consisting of Bethnal Green East, North and South Christchurch: consisting of Allhallows Barking, Southwark and Spitalfields Holy Trinity Minories Homerton Liberty of Norton Folgate Mile End New Town Mile End Old Town - eastern and western Ratcliff Shoreditch - Haggerston, Hoxton Old Town, Hoxton New Town, South Shoreditch Spitalfields St Botolph Aldersgate St Botolph Aldgate St Botolph Billingsgate St George in the East - St george North and St John St Olave Old Jewry Whitechapel Whitechapel St Mary - Aldgate, Goodmans Fields, Mile End New Town and Whitechapel Church As these will be lengthy I will not beposting all here. I will post when any section is finished and if you mail me I will send the section you want. Hi Chris Remember the enlargement you did of the fencing in Mitre Square? Is there any chance of finding out whether the house behind that fencing (and linked to the Square by a passageway) was occupied or unoccupied, at least in 1891? Also whether the door facing Mitre Square was the front door or the back? Robert

Chris, many thanks for that. I was amazed at the age for Clapp, as I'd always pictured him as an elderly, rather deaf man with an aged wife who needed a nurse. Given the age of his wife, though, and with a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old Clapp living next door, do you think 28 might have been an error in the census records? I'm confused by the whole business, Chris. Foster's plan in Paul Begg's book shows Mr Taylor's shop with three empty houses next to it. Why did he say a house was empty when Clapp was living there? Chris, I sent my last post then saw you'd sent two more. Thanks again. Amazing to think that the whole layout of Mitre Square in '88 was only recently come to pass. Robert |

Thanks, Chris. That was his age, then. I did wonder because just in the tiny bit of exploring I've done, I've seen one or two wacky things. There was a woman and her daughters in the BPS or adjoining infirmary, in 1881 - according to the ages she was supposed to have given birth at the age of 5 or something daft like that. I assumed she'd lowered her age out of vanity. Robert |

Chris, several posts above you list the residents of Mitre Square and Mitre Street in the 1891 census. The 70 year-old Fanny Hyams in no. 24 was the mother of the lunatic Hyam Hyams. This was also the former home of Amelia Lewis, the wife of the Mitre Square witness, Joseph Hyam Levy. Amelia's brother, as far as my deductions go, was the fruiterer Moss Lewis, who was recorded at no. 17 (where Amelia also lived at one time.) For anyone interested in the Mitre Street/Square addresses at the time of the murders, see Mark King's article, "Hyam Hyams" on the Dissertations Board. |
