I couldn’t find the right thread for this, although I have recently seen mention of it, so I started a new one. Metropolitan Police Beats: ‘Beats are worked at the regulation rate of two and a half miles per hour. By day the constable walks the kerb side of the pavement, by night the inner side.’ London City Police Beats: ‘The beats are much shorter, averaging ten minutes.’ (Clarkson & Richardson 1889, London.) |

AP, there's some stuff on police beats at http://www.victorianlondon.org/publications3/catechism.htm The PCs used to mark doors, walls and ladders to see if anyone had been there. Robert |
