Bravo. This list is impressive. I like the "Nobody can remember why they were suspected, but they were" and the "He wore a hat". Concerning this last category, can you say me who is Edwin Burrows? Olivier |

You can add a new category for "Because some people can't tell fiction from reality" with: Richard "he plays a murderous doctor so well on stage" Mansfield "The trained monkey like in that story by Poe" And I think you are missing Tumblety (!), the Frenchys, and others too. After looking through this website I have added a few more. Shaw, Jack - confessor Schulse – convicted murderer Shaw, James – convicted murderer Pennock, James - convicted murderer Dr Merchant – Died after Kelly McCarthy, Daniel – Everyone else Mansfield, Richard - Everyone else Lipman, Julius – no one remembers La Bruckman, Arbie – non-canonical suspects Halliday, Elizabeth - convicted murderer The Reverend Samuel Barnett – fiction Green, James (s) – witness Ali, Ameer Ben - non-canonical suspects If you look back in the original list Tumblety is under misogynists, there could be no way I'd forget that guy being my favourite suspect. (Favourite in that he is the most interesting, I don't believe he was the Ripper.) Oliver, Edwin Burrows according to John J. Eddleston's book (which I have to admit gave me about 87% of this list) "was arrested on 8 December 1888 solely because he was wearing a peaked cap" Wintergreen |

Hi Wintergreen, Hrm... My fault on the Tumblety thing. I didn't remember seeing him, and I tried to so a search for the name in my browser's "find in this page" option. I'm not sure if I had a typo in the name or what, but it didn't find one. If you are considering the suggestions to add an unspecified male relative of Kosminski or a grab bag of random Jews, may I suggest a category name of "A Jew dun it, and he's a Jew"? Reginald Saunderson wrote a letter signed Jack the Ripper after killing a woman in 1894, but would have been only 15 in 1888. According to Philippe Jullian, the Duke of Bedford was a suspect. According to Dan Farson, an insane relation of Bertrand Russell was also suggested (presumably his uncle, George). The only problem is knowing where to draw the line. Farson also suggested in jest that the music hall artiste Marie Lloyd might have been the killer. Perhaps there are even more ridiculous names already on the list ... Chris Phillips

Have you included Sir (then Dr) Robert Anderson, Asst Commissioner, Met Police, included as one of the conspiracy by Knight as I recall. I would also recommend including Fred Abberline (because the detective often did it as Agatha Christie has shown); Patricia Cornwell, who I think did it in a previous life; and why not Queen Victoria herself, as someone will suspect her some day (bound to) and she was probably protecting her grandson by killing prostitutes he might one day encounter should he ever stray into Whitechapel. (She cannot, by definition, have as an alibi, lunching with herself!!) |
