Lil,

The attention was great, not only in London but throughout the world. On a local level, certainly the inhabitants of the Whitechapel area were scared witless. On a political level, the murders were seen by opposition parties and their supporters as a way to emabarrass (and possibly bring down) the party in power. For social reformers it was an ideal (if unfortunate) way to bring attention to the plight of the poor in the area. Because of rumors a Jew was Jack it also fomented more anti-semitism. It was also way for newspapers to sell papers and so on.

And, with trans-oceanic cables and other technological advances it quickly became a world-wide sensation. In a magazine article published recently I mentioned how, at the height of the Ripper scare, a woman in New York City found a man under her bed and went running into the street screaming it was "Jack the Ripper!" The Ripper murder captured the attention of people around the globe.

Anyway, spend a little time looking over the topics on these boards and I'm sure you'll get much of what you need.

But just remember that if this is a school project your teacher will probably require you to provide references in the form of books and/or articles on the subject, not just the rantings of the likes of us on an internet bulletin board. Check the Ripper Media section of this site for a review of books and periodicals. Best of luck! Do well!
