British Metropolitan Police Whistle SPITALFIELD
This is an old three-tube, nickel plated PERKO brand whistle marked MADE IN ENGLAND on the end of the middle tube, and METROPOLITAN POLICE SPITALFIELD to the right of the PERKO logo.

The whistle is about 6-3/4 inches long and has a 14 inch chain with a lanyard ring on the end that slips over a uniform button.

All three tubes have their own holes so that the user can produce a variety of notes by fingering different combinations of holes while blowing in the mouthpiece. Odd stuff, works perfectly!

You are bidding for an as new hardback A Prescription for Murder: The Victorian Serial Killings of Dr. Thomas Neill Cream by Angus McLaren

From 1877 to 1892, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream murdered seven women, all prostitutes or patients seeking abortions, in England and North America. A Prescription for Murder begins with Angus McLaren's vividly detailed story of the killings. Using press reports and police dossiers, McLaren investigates the links between crime and respectability to reveal a remarkable range of Victorian sexual tensions and fears. McLaren explores how the roles of murderer and victim were created, and how similar tensions might contribute to the onslaught of serial killing in today's society.

It was on the gallows that Cream would perform his last (and perhaps most inexplicable) action -- he is said to have uttered "I am Jack..." as the noose fell taut and squeezed the life out of his body. As the Ripper murder scare was still in full force, the immediate assumption was that Cream had confessed to being Jack the Ripper.

LONDON - BETHNAL GREEN POLICE DIVISION
Very good condition card of London. There is no caption on the card, however I have been informed by someone who recognised the building that this is Bethnall Green Police Division. It is photographic and has been postally used, but has been dated 1920. It is a nice card for those interested in the area or those interested in police force items.

WHO WAS JACK THE RIPPER? A Collection of Present Day Theories and Observations.

I’m reluctant to sell this one, but for sale is Who Was Jack the Ripper? compiled by Camille Wolff. Publisher: Grey House Books, London, 1995. As described in "The Jack the Ripper Handbook" by Ross Strachan, this 113-page book is "Limited to 100 copies only in an edition signed by all fifty three contributors". This is one of the hard to find 1/100 signed and numbered editions with this one being #12/100. With the exception of six contributors, this rare book is signed by all. Please note that this is NOT a reprint issue. Quoting again from The Jack the Ripper Handbook, "Specialist crime bookseller Camille Wolff produced and edited this book which features fifty three Ripper experts giving their views on the murders. The contributors included Stewart Evans, Paul Begg, Donald Rumbelow and Martin Fido. Loretta Lay of Grey House Books must also take credit for producing this book which no collector should be without".

Reproduction or film prop H Division (Whitechapel) Police helmet plate badge. Badge and crown have been checked in standard reference works including Badges of Office by Taylor & Wilkinson (p.77) to ensure it is exactly the right size and type that would have been worn during the Jack the Ripper investigation in 1888. Badge is cast and is of a good weight, it is metal and appears to have been cast in brass, chromed and the front painted around the numbers. Garter bears the title "Metropolitan Police" the numbers and letter H171 have been cast with the badge and are not removable like the originals. The back of the badge has two lugs just to the East and West.

Although this is a reproduction or film prop helmet plate badge real H Division (Whitechapel)Metropolitan Police badges of the Jack the Ripper period are very rare, I have never seen one on the market (I collect military and police badges) and I am sure it would look great if it was framed up to adourn the wall of a keen crime buff or Ripperologist.

WAXWORKS
PAUL LENI
1923 SILENT FILM WITH ADDED MUSIC
Filmed in Germany by famed director Paul Leni, this film is about a writer who visits a mysterious wax museum to do a write-up on the exhibits. As he spotlights each wax character they come to life to re-enact their famous lives. The lives in questions are the most famous murderers and barbarians of all time, Jack The Ripper, Harroun al Rasdchid and Ivan The Terrible. The stars of this film are the who's who of early German cinema; Emil Jannings as Raschid, Conrad Veidt as Ivan and Werner Krauss as The Ripper. Similar in style and set design as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Amputation Knife - Circa 1870 - Henry Lewis - Cased.
Amputation Knife - Circa 1870 - Henry Lewis - Cased.

Made by surgical instrument maker Henry Lewis of London around 1870.

The instument it self is 13-3/4" or 350mm long in total and has a silver plated handle which bears the name Henry Lewis. The blade is still very sharp and considering its age is in remarkable condition (would benifit from a good buffing to get back that mirror finish lustre) Comes complete with the original case that holds the knife so that the blade does not touch the bottom. The case is stamped on the inner lid with;

Hi Ken
Is it worth it? Well, that calls to mind the old saying that any item is worth what someone is willing to pay for ir.
From my perspective the answer would be "No" in that I am not a collector and am only interested in the information that the item contains and have no intrinsic interest in owning the item itself.
Of course, a collector would completely disagree and that is fine in that we have different priorities.
If you are asking is that particular edition of The Times has a market value of $80, I'm afraid I'm simply not qualified to judge that.
All the best

For all those of you who think you see an "FM" on Mary Kelly's wall...

E-bay now has something for true believers in such things.

You've probably heard about it by now. Made (and almost eaten) by a woman right here in Florida.

Here's the item she is selling, complete with detailed explanation of its origins and a picture. It's made the news, drawn the attention of the wire services, and had some serious bidding already.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=19270&item=5535890757&rd=1

And, in case you think this is only related to Ripper matters via the obvious similarity to the "initials on Mary Kelly's wall" nonsense, here's a "serious" explanation for the whole phenomenon by someone whose name regular visitors of Diary World will instantly recognize from the old days.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ny--cheesymiracle-exp1117nov17,0,2110063.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire

Bid now, nor accept the consequences of being an unbeliever,

Hi John,

This piece of cheese on toast that you have brought to our attention has even made BBC News..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4019295.stm

I see that there are even replicas up for bid on eBay! Along with teeshirts, pictures and charms.. What's so sad (or disturbing, even) is that there are bids...

Personally I think the image on the sandwich looks more like Mae West. But then, I have no imagination!

I think my favourite auction is for the "I Ate the Virgin Mary" teeshirt (it was sacrilicious).

Maybe we should market the "FM" on the wall.. I distinctly saw an "FM" on my kitchen wall yesterday morning after I'd attempted to make pancakes. Photos will be up for bid tomorrow!

Bestest,

Lyn

Well, you can't apply logic to something like this, I know. But I do wonder (1) How does she know this is an image of the Virgin Mary as opposed to some other woman? and (2) Why would she be willing to give up such a grand good-luck charm that netted her $70,000 in casino winnings for a mere $3000?

The Metropolitan Police Guide 1916
This is a rare book (so we have been told), covering the Met Pol Policing guide from 1916.

It covers many laws that are still around today also many that have been since forgotten!

An intriguing read for anyone who has any interest in law or policing throughout the years. This is an amazing book covering vast topics of law.

This sixth edition is published by James Robert Esq.

Just in case you didn't already know to take eBay descriptions with a cynical eye...

Of course at least the details as seen below explain that he wasn't linked until almost a century later, though they don't clear up the serial rapist part. The text seems to be taken directly from the prince's Wikipedia artcle without attribution or license. Oh well.

237 case histories that make up Richard von Krafft-Ebing's legendary Psychopathia Sexualis.

Long unavailable, this landmark text in the study of sexual mania and deviation is presented in a new, modern translation highlighting the cases chosen by Krafft-Ebing to appear in the 12th and final edition of the book, the culmination of his life's work compiled shortly before his death.

An essential reference book for those interested in the development of medical and psychiatric diagnosis of sexual derangement, the Psychopathia Sexualis will also prove a fascinating document to anyone drawn to darker human sexuality and behaviour. Cases range from Jack the Ripper to the most extreme instances of 19th century psychiatrists and criminologists.

A SAMBA FOR SHERLOCK HOLMES, new foreign feature film!
Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper in this Brazilian mystery
Set in Rio de Janeiro in 1886, this comedy-thriller begins with the theft of a Stradivarius violin that has been presented by His Majesty the Emperor of Brazil to one of his more delectable mistresses--a harmless crime in itself but one that mystifies the authorities and (far more important) embarrasses the Emperor.

At the suggestion of the famous actress, Sarah Bernhardt, who is on a triumphant tour through South America, the great Sherlock Holmes is summoned from London to solve the case. But by the time he arrives, events have taken a turn for the worse, as a series of grisly murders shocks the city--the victims all beautiful young women. In each case, the killer leaves his calling card: a violin string entangled in the woman's pubic hair, the corpse stripped of a flap of skin.

Holmes (and Dr. Watson, of course) are immediately off on the track of the killer, but although Sherlock succeeds in coining the term "serial killer," his celebrated powers of deduction don't get him very far with the case itself. Overcome by the charm of the tropics, and the strong appeal of a pretty young actress, Sherlock soon finds himself in a thicker fog than he ever encountered back home in London.

And in dark counterpoint to Holmes's brilliant deductions, there is the chilling yet hypnotic voice of the killer himself, a monster of intelligence, evil, and ever-spreading fame. The film even leads us to the ultimate conclusion that this madman is none other than...Jack the Ripper!

Hi All,

I got my bound Punch for three entire years - 1887-1889 - for £20 in an antique centre on the south coast. It's in excellent nick, considering how much thumbing through I've done since I found it.

Love,

Caz
