Would it be possible for Charles Cross to be included in the `Suspects` area of this forum?

Has anyone researched this man thoroughly? I suppose it is out of the question that this carman could have been John Netley using an alias?

Hi Tod

As far as we can tell, Charles Cross was simply a witness who was one of the first to the Mary Ann Nichols death scene. There is nothing to indicate that he was anything other than a carman on his way to work, as he stated, when he came upon the murder scene. We have to remember that in that day and age, with horsedrawn transportation prevalent in the city of London, there was an abundance of drivers of hacks and wagons in the metropolis and Cross was such a man. The fact that John Netley drove a carriage should not be viewed as a link between the two men. In my opinion, it is simply coincidence and there is no indication that "Charles Cross" was John Netley in disguise as you suggest might have been the case. Another point is, if we were to make every witness a suspect, the suspects section of this website will get out of hand. The police apparently felt there was no reason to suspect Cross might have been the murderer and not an innocent witness.

All the best
