This is so informative that I thought it worth posting in its entirety, I just wish we had such records for the ten years previous... one will see some familiar names: 'EAST END 1888 The following names are indexed from "East End 1888" by William J. Fishman, Prof of Political Studies, Q Mary College, London This is a study of the appalling conditions of the inner London suburbs of the Tower Hamlets area in 1888. It is a study of poverty, violence, sweated labour, terrible health, even worse housing. It is a revelation of just how bad conditions were, and makes a genealogist boggle at how any records could be made. It is salutary reading. Many addresses are included, though probably often temporary as people often moved. Indexed by Mike Foster, Wellington, 1993 It is available in Wellington Central Library. Most of the information relates to 1888, eg a child aged 12 is probably 12 in 1888. ========================================================================== AARONSON Victor 10, violin prodigy, 77a W'chapel Rd, concert 308 ABRAHAMS Joseph Age 13, Jews Orphan Asylum, badly beaten 101 ADAMS William St Mary's Orphanage, sister in Southend 108 ADAMSON Revd W Vicar of Old Ford 40 AGAR Mr Member of Poplar Board of Guardians 107 AIRESON Mrs Officiant at chapel in St Georges 208 ANDERSON Kate Age 28, prostitute, charged with theft 184 ANDRE Mr 84 Mansfield Road, Haverstock Hill, London NW 98 ANSON Margaret 34, drunk, ill-treated her female child 201 BACON Louisa age 34, 29 Bakers Row, blind, helped to trade 99 BADCOCK Mr T Master of Union Workhouse, South Grove 90 BAILEY John 45, charged with begging (with s Alfred, 5) 181 BARBER Robert F'monger, 153 St Leonards Rd, Bromley, drowned204 BARHAM Mr Member of Whitechapel Board of Works 21 BARNETT F E Inmate St Georges w'house, legacy distrained 111 BARON Mr Led a post-Ripper vigilante gp in Mile End 220 BARRETT Benjamin 45, broke in Prim Methodist Chapel, Poplar 196 BARRETT Louis Boot/shoe maker, Wolsey St, Stepney 184 BARTLETT James Lived in Antill Rd, off Grove Rd, good area 197 BARTRAM Mr Sanitary Inspector, East End 41 BEAN Alfred Age 14,Forest Gate Sch, picked for "Exmouth" 96 BEHRENDS Henry President of the Jews Hospital 102 BELLHOUSE James W'chapel Union charge:father:18 Bradbury St 92 BENNETT William Ship's steward, drunk with a gun, arrested 192 BEVAN Emily 63 Philpot St, attempted rape by resident 207 BILLING Revd R C An anti-immigration cleric, Rector of Sptlflds147 BLACK Clementina Gave info to Commons Select Committee 75 BLACK Clementina Represenative of Womens' Protection League 285 BLANK Joseph E Secretary of Jews' Temporary Shelter 66 BLOOM Henry Seaman, lost his coat (see Regan/Crawley/Shea)184 BOLTON Sarah Stole mangling from grandson (Webb) 182 BOSWELL Susan 15, assaulted by Richard Tabb 202 BOYLE John D at London Hosp.
