Query:
I've asked before but nevr got an answer. did the Royal Marine Light Infantry wear a similar uniform to the army's? is it possible that instead of going off with two soldiers, Pearly Opll and Martha Tabram actually were accompanied by two royal Marines and where can I find a decent colour picture of an appropriate uniform. research for a novel and a new theory concerning poor dead Martha. Neil

Hi Neil
This pic and description might be of some use:

rmli

Private, Royal Marine Light Infantry,
by Sawyer of Walmer.
Blue glengarry with brass 'globe & laurel' badge and black silk ribbons hanging from the rear. Scarlet tunic faced blue on collar, cuffs and shoulder straps, which also bear the globe & laurel badge embrodered in white. White piping at base of collar, down front opening, all round the shoulder straps, and formed into a 'crow;s foot' above the pointed cuff. An OR's dress Home Service helmet with RMLI plate can be seen on the pedestal. Whitened buff leather belt with brass locket. Blue trousers with quarter-inch scarlet welt

Chris and Robert;
Thank you. to the uininitiated the uniform would resemble a soldier's but not neccesarily the Coldstream Guards as were paraded for Polly after Martha Tabram's death.
What are your thoughts that the two ladies were accompanied by Marines? Neil

I can't say, Neil. Poll seemed pretty adamant they had white bands round their caps. But then, she was probably drunk for most of the murder night.

Robert;
I have an e-mail into the Coldstream Guards Archives secion so hopefully I'll have some more information to pass on in the next few days.What I may need is a book displaying British empire uniforms for all the regiments based ni London during the period and that may offer some new areas of research. I await the answer from the venerable Coldstream Guards. Neil
