Hello everyone - Since Adrian's death back in April 2003, several people made donations to the Casebook in his name. Originally the idea was to put together a memorial for Adrian on the site. We've done this on the Press Reports page, but after some thought I decided an even more fitting memorial would be to continue and expand the structured Press Project which he initiated back in 1999. With this in mind, I've put these donations toward the purchase of complete July-December 1888 collections of microfilm for four London daily newspapers from the British Library - the Daily News, the Evening News, the Standard and the Morning Advertiser. Each of these papers contained extensive coverage of the Whitechapel Murders, much of it unique and largely inaccessible to the average Ripper researcher. With the help of Chris Scott and David O'Flaherty we've already begun transcriptions of the Daily News, but we could use all the help we can get. If you're willing to volunteer as a transcriptionist, please contact me. If you'd rather make a contribution in Adrian's name to help finance the project, that is more than welcome as well. Thanks to everyone who has already volunteered and contributed! I'll post regular updates on the progress of the project in this spot. You can already find our first few transcriptions of the Evening News and Daily News at: http://casebook.org/press_reports/daily_news/ http://casebook.org/press_reports/evening_news/ Stephen P. Hi, Stephen Thanks for this update. As I have expressed before, and as you also feel, Stephen, the passing of the gentlemanly and helpful Adrian M. Phypers aka "Viper" has left a gaping hole in the world of Ripperology. His contributions to this wonderful website were substantial. Expansion of the immensely useful Press Project in Viper's name is a fitting ongoing tribute to the man. All the best Chris Christopher T. Ultimately, the press reports should be annotated. As we move further away in time from the Victorians, transcriptions by themselves aren't going to be enough to tell the story. I know--it would be a massive undertaking. Stephen, have you ever explored the possibility of obtaining a grant to help operate Casebook, since it's a non-profit outfit? I've got insomnia--this is the stuff I come up with when I can't sleep. |

Hi, I'd lost this thread - but here it is. I'd like to know more about helping out, if someone in the know could give me an email that'd be great, I did once try to email Stephen about it but I guess I had the wrong address or something Cheers Jennifer "Think things, not words." - O.W. Holmes jr

Just a quick update on the latest phase of the Casebook Press Project. We're finishing up the Daily News (August through December 1888) right now with just a few articles left to transcribe, and work has already begun on transcription of the Morning Advertiser. We've got several volunteers assiduously working on these press reports as we speak, but if anyone else is interested in volunteering, please don't be shy! We can always use an extra pair of hands. The project is done all via email so no mailing address is required. Digital photographs of pertinent articles are sent to volunteers, ranging in size from 50K up to 600K each, in JPEG format. Transcriptions can be sent back in MS Word or in Notepad format, or even in the body of an email. Anyone interested can email me at pressproject@casebook.org. Thanks!

Hi Stephen Again, Stephen, thank you for making available to us this valuable resource that comprises transcriptions of press articles on the case that have been published worldwide both at the time of the case and since. Our hearty thanks go to you, to Chris Scott, Alan Sharp, and the anonymous transcribers who are working to carefully and accurately transcribe the articles. I know our late friend Viper aka Adrian M. Phypers will be smiling down from heaven to see how the Casebook Press Project that he started has continued to grow and flourish, to become an ever more indispensible resource to students of the case. Thank you, everyone! All the best Chris (Message edited by chrisg on December 03, 2004) Christopher T. George North American Editor Ripperologist http://www.ripperologist.info

Just a short announcement that we've just today put up the final articles for the London Daily News in the press reports section. That completes the full run of all articles published between August and December 1888 - 99 days' worth of articles in its entirety. You can enjoy the fruit of our transcriptionists' labors at: http://casebook.org/press_reports/daily_news/index.html Thanks again to all our volunteers! Stephen P. Ryder, Exec. Hi Stephen Unfortunately I am too committed to various projects to be able to help but I would like to second your call for volunteers. The Press Project is an incredible effort to precisely archive all of the contemporary newspaper reports on the case published worldwide. I believe the originator of the project, the late great Viper aka Adrian M. Phypers would be immensely proud to see how the project has continued to grow in volume and in its value to researchers of the case. All the best Chris George Christopher T.
