Hi!! Just thought..... as one does ...given a day off of work ...that there is an opening for people coming and going to see the 'sites' of Whitechapel......be good to be able to arrange times and places etc and hunt as a pack maybe.... Thoughts? suzi |

Hi Suzi, A great and very nice idea, which I would jump on immediately if I would be in London (which I unfortunately won't be for some time yet). But I'll let you know. Hope there are others as well that will pick up on it. All the best Glenn Gustaf Lauritz Andersson Crime historian, Sweden |

If anybody is aiming to join up on the JtR conference in Brighton next summer, maybe we could take a day and pick up on Suzi's idea for a get-together "walk and talk"? (But hopefully I'll be back in London sooner than that.) All the best Glenn Gustaf Lauritz Andersson Crime historian, Sweden |

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask or a stupid question but how safe is it to go walking around Whitechapel? Are some Ripper sites better for visiting than others? I thought of going to a few sites last year but was unsure whether it be a smart move to go wondering round the area with a map blatantly looking an outsider and semi lost.

Robert, I would prefer a Guinness in the White Hart. They have excellent stout and bar food, not to mention the advantage of feeling Severin Klosowski breathing down your neck. -------------------------------- "pf arm", Don't worry. I went around Whitechapel and Aldgate both at night and during the day, and I felt perfectly safe, more so than here at home. Actually, I went around with a map myself and people came forward out of the blue, offering me help without me even asking for it. They were very friendly and helpful. So you shouldn't have anything to worry about. It is not more risky then anywhere else. Some Ripper sites are totally destroyed and changed beyond recognition, like the Kelly site (there is now a modern car park), the Stride site (now called Enriques Street) and Hanbury Street (Chapman). The Nichols site (now Durward Street) is quite changed but it still contains a certain atmosphere, and the same goes for Mitre Square (which is totally rebuilt with modern buildings, but the layout of the square and the old cobble stones are still there). The best site in my view, is the Tabram site, George Yard (now called Gunthorpe Street). This little gloomy road, with access through an archway from Whitechapel High Street is -- although the actual building is gone -- incredibly well kept and contains a lot of atmosphere. Highly recommended. All the best

Hi all I had to go to Tower Hamlets local history library the other day. I thought I would take a little detour to get there by way of Alderney Road (where George Lusk had a yard. And he lived in Tollit Street which runs of Alderney Road). I have to say it was like walking into a time warp, as very little has changed since then, even the street lamps looked victorian. I must take some pictures next time I am down there. Glenn, Pinchin Street is a good site as well, very little has changed and it has cobbles too (I know how you like your cobbles). All the best Rob |

Hi Natalie, Glenn Natalie, Pinchin Street definitely has cobblestones, just double checked some photos, in case I was losing my marbles. I took this the same day I just missed you in Durward Street. As you can see, I took that on a bright sunny day, I am sure on an cloudy overcast day it would look as drab and desolate as Natalie described. All the best Rob |

Wow! thanks all! Right its perfectly safe to wander about as long as you dont make a big thing of doing the map in hand thing!,,,,,mind you we've all done it at times!...think the thing to do is when in the pub reccee yr next place and go for it! Rob- Great pic have been there and know what you mean! Glenn- Cobblers!...... he he! but the cobbles in Mitre Sq take some beating |I reckon IMHO! ok looks like we're getting here tho!!! Think the darts would be a good meeting place as a starter tho! Cheers Suzi

Rob, Great photo as usual. Thanks for that. Suzi madam! Ah! I never found the time to go into the City Darts, to my regret. So little time, so much to do... London is a big city. "...but it helps if you vaguely know where youre going" Tell me about it! The first time I went there on my own I felt (and probably looked) like a decapitated hen, losing my orientation on several occasions. And note that I had even "rehearsed" the map beforehand. Thanks for the advise, i won't be up London until the autumn, probably November, so i've plenty of time to rehearse those routes!
