The newest issue of the Reader's Digest has an article about recent advances in the forensic use of DNA. The article said that in the not too distant future it may be possible to actually reconstruct the physical appearance of the individual, facial features, etc. Mary Kelly had some defensive wounds on her hands. Would there be anything under her nails after 116 years? Would there even be nails?

depends on condition of the body/blood. if moist there would be too much mould and the cell structure would break down. if dry theoretically yes. one would have to reconstruct the dna from fragments, takes a lot of time and money. the reconstruction of physical features is rather pie in the sky stuff. it would be easier to check living relatives of suspect and work backwards to find a match. the principle is fairly straight forward we could do it in a few days given the dna. we could give a negative easily, positive answer more tricky. ps i am director of anglia dna bioservices a forensic dna lab.

Charles, suppose none of the descendants of the suspects will cooperate, or suppose they all cooperate and JTR was not one of the known suspects. Could you do anything at all?

Hi Diana,

Oh, that's interesting. At this point they aren't really doing any facial reconstruction, but they can narrow it down to general classes of countries of origin and make educated guess at the most broad characteristics, like skin color and maybe others. If we did somehow manage to find DNA from the Ripper I'm not sure at this point anyway how far we could get.

(By the way, did you get my private message?)

Personally I would be in favor of waiting. At this stage the info isnt specific enough. But as the technology develops and they get it to where they can come up with a portrait, then it might be worth agitating for an exhumation. At this point all we would do is destroy any available DNA and get very little detail in exchange.

There's little point in taking dna and conducting recostructions while there's a 50/50 possibility we'd get the wrong woman.

Well, you could do a reconstruction on the body as well. We have mortuary shots of Nichols, Chapman, Stride, and Eddowes. Kelly might be a bigger problem, but we know she was Welsh or Irish, that would help. I really think that once the technology matures, you will be able to team up info on a DNA microarray with a computer and get some really great results.

Hi Diana,

Nope, sorry, I either didn't get your reply or I accidentally erased it while trying to clean out 100 autoresponse notices to posts to this site. If you could resend it I'd appreciate it.
