I wanted to start a thread to comment on the recent donation to the Casebook by Alex Chisholm of complete transcriptions of articles from The Star between August and November of 1888. Much like the Daily Telegraph, Times and Pall Mall Gazette, the Star was one of those papers which offered comprehensive and oftentimes original coverage on the murders. Its reporters often performed direct investigative work of their own, which results in some fascinating and important reading. Because of the importance and scope of these articles it is taking me a bit of time to properly encode and index-by-topic each article, but I did want to announce that August 7 - September 29th are now complete and available online at: http://www.casebook.org/press_reports/star/ I am continuing work on subsequent articles and will post updates as and when they become available on the site. Once again, my thanks to Alex for donating this wealth of material. - Stephen Stephen P. Ryder, Editor Casebook: Jack the Ripper |

I'd also like to thank Alex for making this information available to everyone. His transcripts represent a tremendous amount of man-hours devoted to typing and proofing these reports. They're much appreciated, Alex! Dave |

My opinion of Alex Chisholm has never wavered. He is the ultimate gentleman and scholar. His efforts to bring detail to this case always humble me, and I am always in awe of his efforts. My own are constantly diminished by his strict adherence to form and detail. I like to think that I am the snapping teeth of this subject, but rare people like Alex are the solid backbone... that will win the day. Thank you, Alex. |

Evening Each Many thanks for all the thanks, and the way too generous comments. They are very much appreciated. Thank you! (AP, the back-hander should be with you in a couple of days.) It’s around eight years since my first transcripts appeared on this invaluable site, so this small addition to the immense contribution of Viper and his team, and more recently the tremendous input of Chris Scott, is probably long overdue. Of all the newspapers of the time that I’ve been able to read, I have a particular fondness for the much maligned Star. Hopefully, thanks to Stephen enabling wider access to these reports, others may be persuaded to view the ‘Twinkler’ in a more favourable light. Thanks again. Best Wishes alex
