The Brighton fringe festival is advertising a series of ghost walks in the town of Lewes during May. They apparently feature a connection to the Jack the Ripper murders. Does anyone know what this connection is? |

Hi, Paul The tour of Lewes might be to see places connected with Coroner Wynne Edwin Baxter who presided over some of the inquests and who practised law in the county town of Lewes. Have a look at http://www.wynnebaxter.com/history.htm Of course our old friend Roslyn D'Onston Stephenson has connections with Brighton as well, notably to the Cricketers Arms pub in Black Lion Street. He stayed there in the summer of 1888 just prior to the Ripper murders before moving to the London Hospital, which put him directly in the murder district. The Cricketers Arms pub is said to be haunted by the ghost of Jack the Ripper. All the best Chris George North American Editor Ripperologist http://www.ripperologist.info |

Hi Paul Thanks for the info. Is there a web link? We are preparing a series of talks/events based on links between the Ripper, Lewes and Brighton for the UK Conference in Brighton 2005. The most obvious connection is that Coroner Wynne Baxter was born and raised in Lewes, becoming its first Mayor. Anyone interested in attenting the Conference can register or sign up for email updates at www.ripperconference.com Adam Organiser 2005 UK Jack the Ripper Conference |

Hi The fringe festival website is at http://194.242.156.252/index.asp? but the Lewes ghost walk is not mentioned there. It appears in the printed brochure. |
