John Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald, a plasterer-bricklayer's labourer, confessed to a member of the public that he was responsible for the murder of Annie Chapman. The information was passed on to the police who made a search for the man and discovered him at a common lodging house in Wandsworth. He is known to have been living in Hammersmith, and made the confession after drinking heavily for several days. His story was investigated and proved to be untrue, as he had an alibi for the night Chapman was murdered. He was released on 29 September 1888.
