THE MYSTERIOUS MURDERS

London, Oct. 6.
Although the perpetrator of the horrible murders in Whitechapel may remain undiscovered, yet his work has been the means of directing the general attention of the public to the utter inefficiency of the police and the lesson taught was probably worth the sacrifice of life required to teach it. The interval between the first four murders followed by an almost similar tragedy near Newcastle-on-Tyne gave cause to the belief that the moster had fled from London. Furnished with whistles with which to summons assistance and walking in pairs the women felt assured of freedom from attack when the double assassination of Sunday morning awakened such mingled feeling of appalling fear and impotent rage as has perhaps never been known in the modern Babylon.
