We are informed that Sir Melville Macnaghten, C.B., Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department and one of the Assistant Commissioners of the Metropolitan Police, has decided to retire owing to the indifferent state of his health.
There is no foundation for the statement which has gained currency that a successor to Sir Melville Macnaghten has been appointed. The appointment is in the hands of the Home Secretary.
