Some evidence of importance has been obtained by the police with regard to the Whitehall murder. A gentleman states that he was about the place on the Saturday before the discovery of the mutilated body, and saw two men approach the boarding of the new police works. One had a barrow with a bundle, and the other climbed over the boarding. A workman has been questioned on the subject, and he admits that he, like the gentleman, as in the vicinity that day, but he denies that his presence was connected with the murder. The police are continuing their inquiries.
A telegram from the Central News to us to-day (Wednesday) says - More human remains, consisting of leg and foot, have been found to-day at the new police building, at Whitehall, close to the spot where the woman's body was recently discovered.
LATER - The newly found remains were discovered by a dog, who drew attention to a heap of mould, under which, on digging up, a leg and foot were found. The fragments were handed over to the Metropolitan police who, with Dr Hibberd, will make an examination with a view to discover whether the leg formed part of the trunk already found in the same place. The fragments now lie at Millbank mortuary.
With regard to the other murder, the police also seem to have been aware since the day the last two were perpetrated that there was ground for suspicion in reference to a missing lodger, and they have in their possession a shirt saturated with blood, which the lodger before disappearing left with his German landlady to be washed. These facts were denied by the police a day or two ago, but they appear now to be confirmed by investigation.
A telegram of to-day (Wednesday) says the man recently arrested at Limavady, Co. Donegal, on suspicion of being concerned in the London murders, has been discharged, inquiries respecting him having been satisfactory.
