THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS

The police yesterday made an arrest which was reported to be in connection with the Whitechapel murders. In the course of the afternoon a man described as a Polish Jew was arrested near Drury lane, for what precise offence is not known. The man, who is of short stature, with a black moustache, was taken to the Bow street police station, where he was detained for a time. Meanwhile a telegraphic communication was forwarded to Leman street police station which is the headquarters of the Whitechapel division, requesting the attendance of one of the inspectors. Detective Inspector Abberline immediately proceeded to Bow street, and subsequently brought away the prisoner in a cab, which was strongly escorted. The man is said to be well known to the local police, although he is stated to have been absent from the neighbourhood lately. The utmost reticence is being observed regarding the arrest and the authorities at the Commercial street police station deny all knowledge of the event, although the man is understood to be detained in their custody. It was subsequently ascertained that the man had been apprehended for stealing a watch.
