Still Shrouded in Mystery--Suspicion Cast Upon Discharged Lunatics
London, September 11--As yet the Spitalfields murderer has not been caught, and the prospects that he will be are rapidly fading. The detectives are losing their heads entirely under the influence of the attack of the newspapers, and the ridicule of the populace, and appear to be further from the scent than ever. Not one of the persons arrested on suspicion has been connected with the remotest circumstances that could induce belief that he was even aware that the murder had been committed, and the police would have been as thoroughly justified in arresting the Queen herself as they were in taking into custody the persons they were compelled to set at liberty liberty [sic] for want of evidence.
Experts advise the police to make strict enquiries concerning recently discharged lunatics. One of the men arrested was discharged a short time ago from an asylum. He exhibits homicidal tendencies, and will be closely watched.
