CRIME IN THE EAST END.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE EVENING NEWS"
Sir- Reading your apt article of to-day "How to Repress Crime in the East-end," I would beg to answer, not in a vacillating manner, but with each affair as it comes to hand- whether from East, West, or South. Look at how respectable people have been left to the "tender" mercy of blackmailers recently in the South of London. It was only last Friday, at Ludgate-hill, a drunken or mad ruffian ran against me in the public highway, using threatening language - why or wherefore I know not. It surprised the passers-by. I appealed to a policeman at a fixed station, Queen Victoria- street; but before he could come the dissolute fellow had escaped. - I am, &c., WALWORTH September 19.
