Opinion in London is again alarmed on account of the news Whitechapel murder, whose victim was a woman as in the previous cases.
It seems that the victim was called Mary Jane Kelly. She was about 26 years of age and lived as the wife of man but without this preventing her seeking her means of living on the streets.
The body was discovered in a house in the neighbourhood which serves as a nocturnal residence for a varied mix of the shiftless and degenerate that abound in that part of London. The victim had been horribly mutilated but no organ was seen to be missing.
The investigations carried out by the police made clear that on the night of the crime Mary Kelly left her lodging at 10 c'clock, as was her habit. A little later a number of people saw her in the company of a man with whom she returned to the house in Whitechapel in which the body was found.
Two individuals have been arrested on suspicion but one was shortly after released from detention.
