BACKERT SENT TO PRISON.

At the London County Sessions, on Tuesday, before Mr. Warry, Q.C., Albert Backert [Bachert], 25, was indicted for having obtained, by means of false pretences, from Elizabeth Pascoe, six quarterns of flour and six quarterns of bread with intent to defraud. - Mr. Geoghegan and Mr. Kyd prosecuted. - The defendant was a member of the committee of the Tower Hamlets Unemployed Investigation and Relief Society, and had been engaged by the Rev. Harry Wilson, vicar of St. Augustine’s, Stepney, as secretary, at a salary of 25s. a week. The object of the committee was to relieve deserving cases of unemployed persons in distress. It was alleged that the prisoner obtained by means of an order not signed by the Rev. Mr. Wilson (who alone had power to issue them) a quantity of goods which he gave to a widow residing in the neighbourhood, and who carries on the business of a beer-house keeper. - He was found guilty and sentenced to three months’ hard labour.
