I had a long conversation, one day this week, with a well-known detective officer, and, in answer to my query concerning the Whitechapel murderer, he assured me, that the "clues" recently published in the newspapers were pure imaginations of journalists. The police have not had up to the present, the remotest clue whatever, for, as he said, "it is impossible to track persons who have not left the slightest clue behind them; and," he added, "the public are fond of sensation, and newspaper proprietors keep them well supplied with the article most in demand."
