IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT.
HOUS OF COMMONS.
THURSDAY.

The SPEAKER took the chair at three o'clock.

COMMON LODGING-HOUSES AND CRIME.

Mr. MATTHEWS informed Mr. Howell that the police authorities know of no case in which a police-constable had said that "the common lodging-houses were the resort of notorious characters." In the opinion of the police it could not be said that crime was attributable to the existence of common lodging-houses.

THE EAST-END MURDERS. - Early yesterday morning the police arrested a man in Bermondsey on suspicion of having been concerned in the recent murders in Whitechapel. The man's movements had been watched for some days. The prisoner was taken to the Commercial-street Police-station, but on inquiry into his statements the police were satisfied of his innocence, and he was released. Two or three other detentions were made with the same result.
